BACKGROUND - CineCuba

Join us at CineCuba 2015 and take in a pallette of perspectives on Cuba that promises not to shy away from showing real life in Cuba; one that amuses, entertains, and provokes an understanding as to how this often misunderstood nation manages to survive and to prioritize its medical and education systems to a standard that is world class by any measure. Cuban films have long been known to highlight controversial issues, yet they also unveil a populace that is generally happy, healthy, sharing, and enjoy an infectious sense of humour. Cuba has a rapidly evolving cultural and musical heritage and we are pleased to bring this to the Royal. CineCuba 2015 promises to delve into the sights, sounds and rhythms that make up the mosaic of history, art, music, sport, and daily routines that define Cuba.

What lies at the heart of this rebellious nation, what is the secret to the magic of Cuba that has the whole world watching in suspense. We dedicate this year's festival to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Cuba and we congratulate ICAIC for this year’s repertoire. Conducta  (Behaviour)
Synopsis:
In a contemporary Havana which is not shown in tourist leaflets a problematic child, orphaned and with a promiscuous drug addict mother, is going to be submitted to a correctional school. His teacher resists the decision of functionaries and bureaucrats because she is the only one that realizes the actual cause of the boy's  problems and assumes the education of him and the rest of his classmates with a lot of responsibility and professionalism. Facing the problem, instead of avoiding it, her very behaviour is also confronted, because she is challenging institutionalized dogmas and prejudices that are obviously not doing any good to the educative process. A touching story that exposes a crude cross-section of the society.  An amazing debut of Armando Valdés as Chala, the protagonist, at only 12 years and with no previous acting experience.

This phrase from Cuban master composer Sergio Vitier appears at the beginning of this documentary. The film covers in a succinct synthesis how a group of the Cuban Music vanguard think about universal values, such as what is homeland, family, music, friendship, heroism and peace, among several others.
